Dr. Derrick L. Cogburn is Associate Professor of International Relations at the School of International Service at American University. His serves as a core faculty member in the International Communication Program and is affiliated with the International Development Program. He is also an affiliated faculty member in the AU School of Communication. Dr. Cogburn’s research and teaching are at the intersection of information science, political science, and international relations. He seeks to understand the role of global information and communication technology on socio-economic development and the institutional mechanisms for global governance, including transnational policy networks and epistemic communities. He also seeks to uncover the socio-technical mechanisms that support geographically distributed collaboration in knowledge work. Dr. Cogburn directs the AU Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP), which was born out of the Center for Research on Collaboratories and Technology Enhanced Learning Communities (COTELCO), an award-winning social science research collaboratory investigating the social and technical factors that influence geographically distributed collaborative knowledge work, particularly between developed and developing countries. He also serves as Co-Director of the AU Internet Governance Lab (IGL). COTELCO is an affiliated center of the Burton Blatt Institute, Centers of Innovation on Disability at Syracuse University. Cogburn is the past president of the Information Technology and Politics (ITP) section of APSA, and of the International Communication (ICOMM) section of the ISA. He has also served as Vice-Chair of the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet), and served on its founding Steering Committee.
