American University
Associate Professor, Department of Marketing

Cristel Antonia Russell is a leading researcher on the influence of television on youth, especially in the area of product placement.  Her publications addressing how brands embedded in the content of entertainment programs affect consumers’ attention, attitudes, and behaviors span business journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research or the Journal of Advertising as well as health and prevention-focused journals such as the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs and Addiction. She has received funding for her research on the nature and impact on youth of alcohol messages in television series through grants from the United States’ National Institute of Health and France’s Institut National du Cancer. She speaks at public policy, health and prevention research conferences as well as at advertising and entertainment academic conferences internationally and is a member of several editorial review boards.   The over 3,000 cites to her publications (per Google Scholar) show that her research has significantly impacted both her primary discipline of consumer research and the health promotion disciplines.
