Susan McElrath has served as University Archivist at American University since August 2004 where she is the manager of the University Archives and Special Collections departments. Her responsibilities include developing and implementing policies and procedures for access, collection development, digitization, processing, and preservation; providing reference and research service to the American University community and other researchers; promoting access to the archives and its collections through exhibits and instructional programs; and working with donors. Having completed her MLS and MA in American History from the University of Maryland, Susan is a member of Society of American Archivists and the Mid Atlantic Regional Archives Conference. Prior to joining AU she served as Processing Archivist at the National Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Institution for four years, and as Archivist at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site for eight years.
