Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology

Nicole Angotti’s research focuses on social and institutional dimensions of sexual health and wellbeing in sub-Saharan Africa, in particular the incorporation of global public health interventions in local contexts; HIV/AIDS, aging and rural livelihoods; and LGBT populations and politics. She also has interests in methodological issues and innovations in field-based research. Two projects on which she is working currently include understanding the high rates of HIV infection among older rural South Africans utilizing a life course lens (a collaborative project recently awarded funding from the NIH-National Institute on Aging), and investigating when, where and why politicized homophobia emerges in some African countries. Some of her recent work has been published in Gender & SocietyQualitative Sociology, Social Science & Medicine, and Population and Development Review
